It’s not uncommon to go into a new year with fresh aspirations of how the “new you” is going to look, behave, and succeed. But in all reality, how long do those resolutions last? Most studies of human behavior reveal a 60% dropout rate in the first month of a new year. 60%!! Here are five tips to help your New Year’s Resolution stick like glue.
- Make the resolution reasonable and realistic. There is no sense in setting the bar for your New Year’s resolution so high that it is unattainable. Let’s be realistic, cutting ice cream completely out of your diet just isn’t going to happen. Neither is exercising 7 days a week. Choose something that you can feasibly achieve and feel good about, rather than a goal that just results in a lot of self guilt. Remember, there’s always next year to beef up your goal to a higher level.
- Pick something that matters. Choosing a goal that makes you feel better about yourself will result in better adherence and self-motivation. Resolutions are about you, so pick something that motivates you….not your spouse, neighbor, teacher, or PT!
- Stick to it. Once you make a plan, encourage yourself (STRONGLY) to commit. Life gets in the way of all best laid plans, but only if you let it. Certainly there will be exceptions, but try to make them just that.
- Reward yourself. You managed to eat vegetarian once a week for a month? Celebrate! Maybe a trip to your favorite restaurant is in order. Rewards keep the goal exciting. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a little prize every once in a while?!
- Keep trying. So your perseverance failed. Don’t throw in the towel and swear off resolutions forever, get back on the horse. It is completely normal to have relapses of old behaviors as you attempt a lifestyle change. The key is not letting the old behaviors return for good.
